| I have a 15 week old Shih Tzu, Maltese puppy. She's had health issues since I've gotten her 5 weeks ago. She's being treated right now for a Kidney infection and we got back to the vet on Tuesday to see if the meds are working. One thing I'm concerned about is that she acts like she's blind. She hugs the walls while she walks and will stop and just stare at the wall, like she doesn't know where she is. She wanders all over the yard, walking very slowly, without going pee. She'll start breathing pretty heavy, with her mouth half open. Has anyone else heard of these symptoms? Again, I am going to the vet on Tuesday. Thanks |

It's very possible that your puppy is having some vision problems. Your veterinarian can check your puppy's eyesight. There may be some treatment to help!
You can do a preliminary test at home. One approach is to use a threatening gesture in front of your puppy called a menacing response. How and if your dog blinks can indicate different conditions. Other approaches include an obstacle course or placing your dog near a table to see if he or she extends their legs. |

dropping a tissue or a cotton ball is another simple vision test.
I hope your vet visit goes well! |

Last Friday I had to put the puppy to sleep. She had had a kidney infection and did loose some of her vision. The vet did xrays and all he could. I couldn't afford taking her to a specialist and even if I did, my vet didn't think there would have been much they would be able to do.
It was a very difficult choice to make. She was a great dog. |

| Kidney infection caused eyesight to fail or was there something else going on? Sorry she is gone. RIP. |

| Thank you. We're not sure what cause the partial blindness. Could have been from the kidney infection. |
